Book: Mindfulness by Ellen Langer 📚
Ellen Langer is one of the world’s leading research scientists, the first tenured female professor in Harvard’s Psychology Department, and creator of what she calls the psychology of possibility—challenging the limits of what we perceive to be impossible.

“Mindfulness lets us see things in a new light and believe in the possibility of change.” ~ Ellen Langer

This book was published over 25 years ago in 1989—before the concept of “mindfulness” went mainstream. Ellen focuses on a Western orientation to mindfulness rather than the popular Eastern.

If you would like to learn more about this more Western approach to mindfulness, check out this book and some of the Big Ideas, including:
– False Limits: we want to be mindful of how quickly and easily we set false limits on ourselves. Explore Ellen’s idea of the ‘psychology of possibility’.
– Process orientation: instead of focusing on whether we can or can’t do something, focus on asking ‘How can I do it?’ and explore a mindset which is focused on the process, vs. a closed-mindset view of only looking at the goals to be achieved.
– Work vs. Play: Spend some time reframing how you view wht you do, and can you begin to shift how you approach what you do on a day to day basis? Can you begin to just open to see see work as merely ‘play’.? Try it on for size and see how that shifts your energy and mood.

Monday Mindfulness with Yoga Sutras 🧘🏽
Today’s Sutra is around the theme of ‘Our True Nature’.

1.3 तदा द्रष्टुः स्वरूपे‌உवस्थानम् ॥ 3 ॥
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe‌உvasthānam ॥ 3 ॥
In the state of Yoga we abide in our true nature which never mutates, it has no form, it is eternal, is the truth of our being and is pure bliss, it is timeless.

What comes up for you when you consider WHO you are at your core; what is the essence of your authentic self?

These yoga sutras, or “threads” (as sutra translated from Sanskrit) of wisdom offer guidelines for living a meaningful and purposeful life. They provide a road map to self realization, which is the purpose of Human life. It gives framework to our life.

And yet a roadmap is only as useful and meaningful as the journey we create for ourselves. So, consider these word in today’s mindfulness practice. Share your thoughts and insights around: What is the truth of our being? How do we recognize and recognize that eternal aspect of our Self?

And today, on the auspicious day of celebrating Holi – may you be guided by the extra opportunity to welcome in Spring and to recognize our own power to choose victory of good over evil, in our thoughts, emotions, and actions.

March 20th ~🌎Int’l Day of Happiness 😊
Today, and everyday, sending best wishes to everyone. May you be happy, may you be free from suffering and may you be free to pursue your highest dreams and aspirations.

How do you define happiness in your life, right now? Throughout our lives, our definition of being happy may change, so it’s a great exercise to write down what truly brings us closer to that deep, abiding joy from within.

The great sages of old remind us of the difference between superficial and temporary feelings and expressions that make us feel happy in the moment and those perineal ways of being that connect us with the more permanent aspect of ourselves and which create a more authentic connection to bliss and contentment.

Do you have any ‘Happiness’ rituals that you do everyday? Just like brushing our teeth to keep them bright and shiny, modern research is confirming the need to have a daily mental hygiene, to help preserve, nurture and grow our capacity to be healthy and happy! So, what will you explore today? How will you follow your bliss?

You can check out some great books with research on happiness, like the one from Tal Ben-Shahar, Happier – Learn the Secretes to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment.
In this great book, he outlines some great ideas, including:
– the four archetypes of happiness
– happiness rituals
– the science of following your bliss
– lifelines vs. deadlines
– time affluence and more…

As an added bonus, you can read a 6 page summary of this great book, or to listen to the audio summary, with this 30-day free trial of the Heroic wisdom platform. Search for the ‘Philosophers Notes’ by the book title or author and enjoy! Share which ones you like the best and what’s the #1 new action you are now inspired to take!! Have fun: Think, Move, Grow!
